UNAM Strengthens the Conservation of Geological Heritage in Mexico

The National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) is intensifying efforts to protect and promote geological heritage through interdisciplinary research, education, and public outreach. As highlighted in a recent article published by Gaceta UNAM, these initiatives emphasize the scientific, educational, and cultural value of geological sites across Mexico.

The program integrates geology, geography, biology, and social sciences to support the identification, conservation, and sustainable management of geosites. A key objective is to raise public awareness of geoheritage and its role in understanding Earth history, natural hazards, and climate change.

These actions align closely with international geoheritage and geopark frameworks, reinforcing Mexico’s contribution to global efforts in geoconservation and sustainable development. Initiatives such as these demonstrate the growing importance of academic institutions in safeguarding geological heritage for future generations.
