Geoconservation Glossary Thematic Working Group (GG-TWG)

Following the decision of the ProGEO Executive Committee at its meeting on 8 December 2025, we are pleased to announce the creation of a Thematic Working Group dedicated to the development of a Geoconservation Glossary.
The Geoconservation Glossary Thematic Working Group (GG-TWG) has been established to develop and maintain a comprehensive, internationally agreed glossary of terms related to geoconservation. Clear and consistent terminology is essential for effective communication among scientists, policy makers, educators, and stakeholders involved in the conservation of geological heritage.
Objectives:
-
To review existing terminology and identify gaps or inconsistencies.
-
To propose standardized definitions for key concepts in geoconservation.
-
To ensure that the glossary reflects current scientific understanding and practical applications.
-
To facilitate multilingual accessibility and promote global adoption.
Why this matters?
Geoconservation is a multidisciplinary field that intersects geology, ecology, cultural heritage, and land management. A shared vocabulary strengthens collaboration, supports legislation, and enhances public awareness.
How we work:
The GG-TWG brings together experts from different countries and disciplines. Activities include:
-
Online meetings and collaborative drafting sessions.
-
Consultation with ProGEO members and external specialists.
-
Publication of updates and opportunities for feedback.
