In a historic move, local authorities and civil society have secured Punta Ballena’s protection as a natural monument in Uruguay. The decision follows a massive citizen mobilization that halted a residential development threatening the site’s unique rocky cliffs and geological features.
Over 34,000 signatures and coordinated action by residents, scientists, and local leaders ensured the site’s geological heritage was preserved. This victory highlights the power of community engagement in safeguarding nature for future generations.
