Key Geoheritage Areas: Time to Build the Geoheritage Future Together

Following a historic decision at the IUCN World Conservation Congress in Abu Dhabi (October 2025), Resolution No. 124 officially recognised Key Geoheritage Areas (KGA) as a new international mechanism within the IUCN framework. This milestone marks the successful conclusion of years of effort to ensure that geoheritage and geodiversity are fully embedded in global nature conservation.

Now, a new and equally important phase begins.

From recognition to implementation

With international recognition in place, ProGEO is moving forward to develop the structures, digital platform, and operational procedures needed to implement Key Geoheritage Areas worldwide. Turning this framework into a functioning global initiative requires coordination, expertise, and crucially financial and institutional support.

We invite partners to help shape this initiative

ProGEO is actively seeking sponsorship, donations, and institutional partnerships from sustainable public and private organisations that wish to support the long-term development of the KGA initiative. By contributing, partners will directly support the global recognition, protection, and promotion of sites of outstanding geological significance.

This is the moment to help transform an approved concept into a living, operational system for geoconservation.

If you know an institution or organisation that may be interested in supporting this initiative, we encourage you to share our informational brochure, which outlines the goals of Key Geoheritage Areas and opportunities for collaboration.

Together, we can build the future of global geoheritage conservation.
