Key Geoheritage Areas (KGA)

A formal motion to establish the KGA initiative is set to be presented by ProGEO at the IUCN World Conservation Congress in October 2025 in Abu Dhabi, with the support of 22 IUCN members from nearly every continent. If adopted, the motion will become an official IUCN Resolution, paving the way for the full implementation of the KGA framework.

KGAs aims to persuade governments and local communities to actively protect these vital areas, guided by IUCN’s geoconservation principles. The KGA Guidelines has been published as part of the IUCN WCPA Issues Paper Series (free download: https://iucn.org/sites/default/files/2025-03/kga-issues-paper_6_red.pdf)
