Geoheritage Increase: New UNESCO Geoparks

UNESCO has announced the addition of 16 new areas to its Global Geoparks Network, bringing the total number of geoparks to 229 across 50 countries. These new geoparks feature exceptional geological heritage, including volcanic structures, cliffs, karst landscapes, and paleontological sites. For ProGEO, this is an important development, highlighting the growing global recognition of geoheritage and the need to protect it. The program combines geoconservation with education, history, and sustainable development for local communities, and it inspires ProGEO’s mission to promote the creation of new geoparks. For geologists and geoheritage enthusiasts, the new sites offer exciting opportunities for research, field observation, and public engagement. This expansion underscores the importance of geoheritage worldwide and provides an excellent chance to promote geological knowledge through photos, videos, and educational materials.
