Geoheritage Spotlight: GSA Renames Division to Embrace Geoheritage
The Geological Society of America in June 2025 has officially renamed its “History and Philosophy of Geology Division” to History, Philosophy, and Geoheritage (HPG) Division a change adopted by a strong majority of its members. This renaming reflects a strategic expansion of the Division’s mission: from classical history and philosophy of geology, to active promotion of geoheritage: the recognition, conservation and public‑engagement around sites and landscapes of geological significance. As part of this shift, GSA has become the official sponsor of the U.S. Geoheritage Committee, marking a major step in institutional support for geoheritage preservation and outreach. The HPG Division plans to organize geoheritage‑focused webinars, build a centralized online resource center, and include geoheritage sessions at its upcoming meeting.
