Description

The first meeting of the ProGEO SW Europe Working Group was held in Caravaca (Murcia, Spain) in 2010 where a scientific session on geoconservation was organised. In 2011, in Lille (France), a second meeting was organised under the title "Geoconservation 20 years after the Digne conference: outcomes and challenges" within the framework of the First GeoReg Forum, that was a scientific meeting dedicated to all geosciences of the regions of France and neighbouring countries. Subsequently, in 2015, also in France, a new meeting was organised in Toulouse, it was dedicated to Geoheritage inventories: challenges, achievements and perspectives.

In 2021, a virtual meeting was held at which the current coordinators were elected. Since then, the aims of the ProGEO SW Europe Working Group members is to know each other and the situation of geo-conservation in our states, as well as to strengthen ties and explore possible ways of collaboration. In March 2022, ProGEO SW Europe Working Group organised its First Virtual Conference about Geoconservation. The Portuguese colleagues hosted the Conference. This initiative is part of an innovative dynamic set up by this ProGEO Group that aims to have continuity in the future.

Thirty-five oral papers attributable to 155 authors were presented at the Conference. Moreover, 254 on-line connections were registered during the two days of the Conference. At the end of the sessions a discussion on geosite inventories and geoconservation practices in the different countries was opened, starting from the 8 keynotes from the 4 countries involved. The aim was to find possible common paths among the countries. From the papers presented, 32 papers were submitted and peer-reviewed by the organising committee. Of these, 12 were published in ProGEO News and a further 20 are under review for publication in a Special Issue entitled "Geoheritage in SW Europe: advances and challenges" of the journal Geoheritage, which has invited the conference organisers to be guest editors.
